Light It Up: Well-intentioned although preachy drama in reference to a group of N.Y.C. kids who surround their high school after professor is unreasonably delayed and a patrol officer is inadvertently shot. He tries to handle a number of tough issues but outcomes are strained and melodramatic. Cast includes Guide Raymond, Woodland Whitaker, Marcello Robinson, Rosario Dawson, Robert Richard, Judd Nelson, Fredro Starr, Sara Gilbert, Glynn Turman, and Vanessa L. Williams (99 minutes,'99)
I Want to Go Home: Lyrical author-actor Green plays a compulsive American cartoonist who voyages to Paris for an art show and to see his alienated daughter Benson. Depardieu, an exuberant admirer, brings him to his mom's country home for the weekend. Written by Jules Feiffer, with a score by John Kander, this Franco-American curio is appallingly poor. Cast includes Adolph Green, Gerard Depardieu, Linda Lavin, Laura Benson, Micheline Presle, and Ludivine Sagnier. (101 minutes,'89)
A la Mode: This is a lighthearted French comedy of a young orphan who becomes apprentice to a village tailor, who proceeds to make it in the fashion scene of the '60s. If the remainder of the film were as clever as the clothes there may be more than suggested. Cast includes Remy Duchemin, Ken Higelin, Jean Yanne, Francois Hautesserre, and Florence Challenge. Fantastic Invasion of The Planet Earth: Discharged theatrically in 3-D, this movie was pretty much a disaster. A young couple finds themselves caught in a deserted town encircled in a mammoth bubble. The original title, The Bubble, was far less deceiving: there are no foreigners and no "invasion" in fact, and not much enthusiasm, either. Cast includes Filmed in widescreen Space-Vision. Mysterious Lady: An Austrian armed forces officer (Nagel) falls in love with Garbo, clueless that she's a Russian agent. Another contrived plot made serviceable by Garbo herself. Cast includes Greta Garbo, Conrad Nagel, Gustav von Seyffertitz, Albert Pollet, and Edward Connelly. (96 minutes,'28)
Dracula: Gloomy retelling of the Bram Stoker classic, with Langella's esteemed Broadway characterization lost among hip terror gimmicks and ill-imagined changes in the original tale. The movie was filmed in England. Cast includes Blunt Langella, Laurence Olivier, Donald Pleasence, Kate Nelligan, Trevor Eve, Diane Duvitski, and Tony Haygarth. (109 minutes,'58)
The Great Race: Long, occasionally ludicrous, often labored comedy, not the best ever made as promoted. Fight pattern and barroom fight are highlights, although the pie scene falls flat, and other gimmicks don't work. This is absolutely a mixed bag, some parts good and some bad. Cast includes Tony Curtis, Natalie Wood, Jack Lemmon, Peter Falk, Keenan Wynn, Larry Storch, and George Macready. (150 minutes,'65)
