Funeral Customs Among Christians

by Guest Author

A funeral is a family (or a State) ceremony held in honour of a dead person. It entails many rites and rituals that are unique to the religion of the deceased.

A majority of Christian funerals have rituals that can be divided into three kinds of events - visitation, funeral and burial. The visitation and funeral parts have greater significance from the point of view of rituals and have been discussed here.

Visitation is the part that comes first, when the body of the deceased is placed in a casket for the friends and relatives to see. The body is usually adorned with the best clothes and jewellery belonging to the deceased. Some cultures need embalming the deceased for the occasion, while others don't.

Some families like to display snapshots from the life of the deceased during the visitation in the form of photos and personal items that were prized belongings of the deceased. Some families also run a video or slide show of the deceased.

This ceremony is then followed by the funeral ceremony, which is a memorial service that is usually conducted at the church. The casket is then brought to the church in a vehicle and the friends and relatives of the departed follow the vehicle. The coffin with its floral arrangement is then housed inside the church.

Funeral services usually include chants and recitals from the Holy Scriptures and the Bible. The mourners or attendees also sing religious songs in chorus. Then the presiding priest delivers a speech, which is closely followed by tributes given by the family and relatives of the departed elaborating upon the life, achievements and good nature of the dead person. Sometimes, mourners are permitted to see the body for the last time before the burial takes place. The service is sometimes also followed by ringing church bells.

The completion of second part, which is the funeral, marks the beginning of the burial, which is the final stage of the proceedings, and the deceased's body is taken through a funeral cortege.
