Wedding Cake Toppers are those little "figures" that sit atop a wedding cake screaming "Oh, Oh, Oh...I'm Unique...I Say Something...Look At Me!" There is a great variety of toppers available on the market today. Yes, we've come a long ways since the humble beginnings years ago. Let's spend a few minutes learning of their story.
Let's start off with a formal description. A wedding cake topper is a small statue, figure or model that sits on top of a wedding cake. Usually made out of plastic, it usually depicts the bride and groom in their formal wedding attire...taking their vows on that special day...
No discussion of toppers, or anything for that matter, would be the same without a bit of history on the subject. So, we have no exact records of the first time someone put a figure on top of a wedding cake. We do have traditions. One of the most popular traditions goes something like this. A girl was getting married to the love of her life. She wanted the world to know that she loved him, and asked her father the baker to help her out. He thought and thought and came up with the ideal solution. He would bake a wedding cake, but he would add a little something special to the top...a model. This model would be of his daughter and her new husband. It was to depict the love that they shared for each other as they started their new life together.
Now we have no way to verify this "story", but it might be factual. Factual or not, it does foreshadow the prominence that the cake topper would have on the wedding day. Surely this baker didn't realize what he had started? He would start something that would change the "big day" for millions of couples!
We now fast forward to the 1950's and the time of Elvis and Rock & Roll. Wedding cake toppers have become extremely popular as those who suffered through the ravages of war started to settle down and start families.
Fast forward to the A.D. 2000+. Wedding toppers have not only survived, they are as popular as ever. New renditions depict same sex marriages and mixed race marriages. Humorous wedding toppers have popped up as well. One rendition shows a bride grabbing her groom by the collar...blocking his escape. Another topper shows her dragging him back to the altar...better luck next time... You can even get toppers that show the happy couple enjoying various hobbies together. Fun, fun, fun...what will they think of next...
